Things May Be Bigger in Texas, but They’re Better in Indiana

Meet Sophie Abell, or should we introduce her as the biggest Dallas Cowboys fan in the world?
At Grace, Sophie is the Referral Services Coordinator on the Grace Care Center team. She also has her hands dirty in the operations behind the ESL services. During Care Center hours, Sophie walks alongside individuals to help them succeed in the areas of financial stability and spiritual growth.

Through working at Grace, Sophie has been blessed to see Care Center friends take advantage of the bridge program that offers opportunities for them to attend weekend services. Not only is the sermon in Spanish, but they are also given Spanish bibles to follow along.
Want to learn more about Sophie’s journey to Grace and how she got into the Dallas Cowboys Fan Club? Read below:
I was born and raised in Texas. I’m one of those Texans that truly believe everything is bigger and better in Texas! I moved to Indiana 10 years ago. I’ve attended Grace for almost 10 years and have been on staff for two years. I fully surrendered my life to Jesus 31 years ago. My life changed forever and I am eternally grateful to Him for choosing me even before I chose Him. (John 15:16) I joined Covenant Community when I came on staff at Grace. That was a turning point not only in my spiritual life but also in my transition to Indiana as I felt that I was finally planted here.

I have two beautiful daughters, Jenn & Paige. Jenn lives in Texas and is the head coach for the girls’ varsity basketball team at Cypress Creek HS in the Houston area. Paige lives here in Indianapolis and is a part of the Access community at Grace. Paige has a passionate heart to serve the homeless. She’s served several times with Grace Teams on the New York City Relief trips.

My husband Gerry is from Indiana and he’s the reason I moved here. I like to say, I moved to Indiana for love. Gerry has been attending Grace for 18 years. I have to admit, when I started coming to services at Grace it was a bit of a tough transition. Coming from a church that I had been a part of for 20 years to a brand new much bigger church, I felt lost in the crowds. It took getting involved in volunteering and attending Women’s ministry to get connected.

I am a HUGE Dallas Cowboys fan! I enjoy football and love supporting my Cowboys. Several years ago the official Dallas Cowboys fan club contacted me about being a fan representative for Indiana. A big highlight for me was being selected to high five the players as they came out of the locker room right before game time at At&t Stadium. It just so happened to be the game verses the Colts. The Cowboys won 42-7. I’d like to think it was because of my high fives. J  I have been selected to attend to watch the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium for three  years. I love going to and being amount the excitement of the NFL Draft. I also go to Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, CA every year. When my husband moved me to Indiana, I told him, “I don’t need big diamonds, I just want to see my Cowboys.” During football season he takes me to attend several away games and I get to back to Texas to go to games as well.

If you see Sophie around Grace, give her a hug or even a, “Go Cowboys.” We appreciate you, Sophie, and all of your work!

I love Sophie! Not only is she the best person, she makes the best tamales!

Sophie, you are one of a kind and that kind is pretty super. Your love and care for those who are hurting speaks volumes.
