Back to School Blast

Offering Hope Through Backpacks

Join us for our annual Back to School Blast Event to help us reach our goal of providing 1,200 backpacks for students at Shepherd Community Center and the Grace Care Center. Pre-filled backpacks can be purchased during July for $25 each. These backpacks equip the students to begin the school year prepared and confident.

Ways You Can Get Involved

1. Purchase a Backpack

Help a student start the school year off right with a backpack filled with supplies!  We will have backpacks to purchase before and after services in the lobby of the 146th Street and Fishers Campuses on July 8/9 and 15/16. We will also be selling backpacks online during the month of July. All backpacks are pre-filled and cost $25 each. We accept cash, checks and credit cards.

Whiz Kids & Other Tutoring

Empower youth, build relationships and transform lives by spending one-on-one time tutoring or mentoring a student at Shepherd Community Center each week. Help elementary students improve their reading and comprehension through our Whiz Kids program. Whiz Kids volunteers must be high school age or older and training is provided. Tutoring occurs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:15-5:15 p.m. Another option is to tutor older students and in other subjects through Shepherd’s Intensity Program on various weekday afternoons.

Meet with a Shepherd youth one-on-one through community-based activities, such as basketball at a local park or exploring Central Library, to build relationship and invest in a student. You can be a caring, consistent adult that makes a big impact in a student’s life.

IPS #58 (Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary) and Arsenal Tech High School

Many of the students in Shepherd’s programs attend IPS #58 or Arsenal Tech High School. Alongside Shepherd, Grace works to support the staff and students at these schools through a variety of activities and serving opportunities. There are many ways to get engaged from helping with Perfect Attendance Parties and tailgates to writing encouraging notes to school staff. To learn more or get involved, contact Liz Byers at
