Jonah is a rebellious prophet of God. God gives him a message for the evil, Gentile city of Nineveh, that God is going to destroy the city.

Jonah doesn’t want to give that message so he runs away on a boat. God sends a huge storm, Jonah is thrown into the sea, and God brings him back in the belly of a giant fish. Jonah finally gives his message to Nineveh and, lo and behold, they instantly change their ways. So God doesn’t destroy the city. In fact, he spares them. Which brings us to chapter 4, where we see how Jonah feels about God’s change of plans.
